January Morning Prayer

279 January Morning Prayer Collection to Start Your Day with God

January mornings arrive with a certain stillness. The holidays are over. The decorations are packed away. The quiet feels different from December’s quiet. It feels like a held breath. The year is fresh, but the cold makes you want to stay under the blankets. A January morning prayer needs to match that energy. Not frantic. Not overly cheerful. Just steady. Just present. These 279 prayers are written for those cold, slow mornings when you need to start the day with God but the words come out like frost.

Morning prayer in January carries unique weight. This is the month of new beginnings, but new beginnings are hard. The resolutions from January first have already started to fray. The gym membership feels like a waste. The promise to read the Bible every day has already been broken for some of you. These prayers meet you exactly there. They do not demand perfection. They do not pretend you have it all together. Instead, they offer simple, honest words to speak to God before the sun fully rises or while the coffee brews.

Every prayer in this collection is built for the specific feel of January. You will find prayers for waking up, prayers for letting go of the past year, prayers for facing the cold, prayers for work, for family, for doubt, for hope. The language stays conversational because God does not need fancy words. Use these prayers on your commute, at your kitchen table, or in those few minutes of silence before the kids wake up. January has thirty one days. You have 279 prayers. That is nine prayers for every day of the month. You will never run out of words.

Opening January Morning Prayers

These prayers help you begin the day with focus and honesty.

  1. God, January morning. Cold. Dark. Slow. I am not ready for the day. But you are. Start without me. I will catch up.

  2. Jesus, the year is new but I feel the same. Same struggles. Same fears. Same sin. Meet me in my sameness.

  3. Father, thank you for another January. Another chance. Another month of mornings. I do not deserve another one. Thank you.

  4. Holy Spirit, warm me up. Not just my body. My heart. It feels frozen some mornings. Breathe on it.

  5. Lord, the holidays are over. The house feels empty. The calendar feels full. Help me find you in the ordinary again.

  6. God, I made promises on January first. I have already broken some. Forgive me. Let me start again on this January morning.

  7. Jesus, you woke up early to pray. Before the sun. Before the crowds. Teach me to find you in the dark morning hours.

  8. Father, the new year energy is fading. January feels long. Give me perseverance for the long haul.

  9. Holy Spirit, speak to me before the noise starts. Before the emails. Before the demands. Just you and me for a minute.

  10. Lord, I am tired. The holidays wore me out. I need your rest more than I need my to do list.

  11. God, thank you for the quiet of January. No parties. No rushing. Just space to breathe. Help me not fill the space with noise.

  12. Jesus, you faced the wilderness. January feels like a wilderness sometimes. Empty. Cold. Long. Walk with me through it.

  13. Father, I bring you this January morning. It is not much. Just another Tuesday. But it is yours.

  14. Holy Spirit, stir me awake. Not just physically. Spiritually. I have been sleeping through my own life.

  15. Lord, the resolutions are already hard. The diet. The budget. The early mornings. Give me grace for small steps.

  16. God, some people love January. Clean slates. Fresh starts. I find it heavy. Help me carry the weight of new beginnings.

  17. Jesus, you said your mercies are new every morning. I need new mercies on this January morning. The old ones ran out.

  18. Father, the sun is rising later. The days are short. Teach me to find light even in the shortest days.

  19. Holy Spirit, fan into flame the gift of God that is in me. The fire has gone low. Blow on the embers.

  20. Lord, I do not feel like praying this morning. I am doing it anyway. Accept my dull obedience.

January Morning Prayers for Letting Go

January is about new beginnings. But new beginnings require letting go of the old.

  1. God, I carry last year into this year. The regrets. The failures. The grudges. Help me set them down.

  2. Jesus, you said to forget what lies behind. I cannot forget. But I can stop letting it drive me. Help me.

  3. Father, I release my grip on the disappointments of last year. The job I did not get. The relationship that ended. I let it go.

  4. Holy Spirit, show me what I am holding onto that I need to release. Bitterness. Fear. Control. Show me.

  5. Lord, I forgive the people who hurt me last year. I say the words even when I do not feel them. Help the feelings catch up.

  6. God, I forgive myself. For the stupid choices. For the wasted time. For the words I cannot take back. Help me receive my own forgiveness.

  7. Jesus, you carried the cross. You know what heavy feels like. Take the weight I have been carrying. It is too much for me.

  8. Father, I let go of the need to understand everything. Last year did not make sense. This year might not either. I trust you anyway.

  9. Holy Spirit, empty me of my plans. My plans for January. My plans for the year. I hold them loosely. You decide.

  10. Lord, I release my fear of the future. January stretches ahead like a blank page. I am scared of what I might write. Write it for me.

  11. God, I stop clinging to my reputation. What people think of me is not my business. What you think of me is everything.

  12. Jesus, you had nowhere to lay your head. I cling to my comfort. Loosen my grip.

  13. Father, I let go of the need to be in control. I am not in control. I never was. You are. That is better.

  14. Holy Spirit, remove the poison of comparison. I compare my January to everyone else’s. Heal that sickness.

  15. Lord, I surrender my calendar. It is too full already. Show me what to cut. Give me courage to say no.

  16. God, I release my fantasies about how this year should go. My fantasies are not your plans. Your plans are better.

  17. Jesus, you prayed, Not my will but yours be done. Let that be my January prayer.

  18. Father, I let go of the illusion that I have time. I do not know how many Januarys I have left. Help me live like that.

  19. Holy Spirit, pry my fingers open. I am holding onto things that are already dead. Let me bury them.

  20. Lord, I release this January morning to you. It is yours. Do what you want with it.

  10. God, thank you for the hope of resurrection. My body is failing. But it will rise. I cling to that hope.

Closing January Morning Prayers

These prayers send you into the rest of the day.

  1. Lord, I have prayed. Now I will live. Make my life a prayer.

  2. Jesus, go with me into this January day. Be my companion. Be my guide.

  3. Father, I give you the rest of the day. Every meeting. Every conversation. Every quiet moment. Take it.

  4. Holy Spirit, bring back to my mind the things I prayed this morning. Do not let me forget.

  5. God, let my January be marked by faithfulness, not excitement. Just steady. Just present. Just yours.

  6. Lord, I go now. But you go before me. Prepare the way. Remove obstacles.

  7. Jesus, you promised to be with me always. Always means January. Always means the hard parts. Thank you.

  8. Father, bless this day. Even if nothing special happens. Even if it is ordinary. Bless it.

  9. Holy Spirit, keep me from sin today. Temptation will come. Give me a way out.

  10. Lord, let me see you today. In the face of my neighbor. In the scripture I read. In the silence between tasks. Let me see you.

  11. God, I release my grip on this day. It is yours. Do what you want with it.

  12. Jesus, into your hands I commit this January morning. And the afternoon. And the evening. All of it.

  13. Father, go with me. Stay with me. Bring me home at the end of the day.

  14. Holy Spirit, fill me so full that I overflow onto everyone I meet.

  15. Lord, thank you for this morning. For the prayer. For the quiet. For you. Amen.

Extra January Morning Prayers

A few more to round out the collection.

  1. God, January has thirty one days. I am only on day whatever. Give me endurance.

  2. Jesus, you are the same in January as you are in July. You do not change with the seasons. Thank you.

  3. Father, let me be a thermostat, not a thermometer. Not just reflecting the temperature. Setting it.

  4. Holy Spirit, remind me that winter is a season of roots growing underground. Let deep roots grow in me this January.

  5. Lord, I cannot see what you are doing. It is dark. But roots grow in the dark. Trust you.

  6. God, for the person who is grieving this January. The holidays were hard. Now the emptiness is louder. Be near.

  7. Jesus, you are the true vine. I am a branch. Help me stay connected. Even in January. Especially in January.

  8. Father, let your face shine on me this January morning. Not because I deserve it. Because you are good.

  9. Holy Spirit, bring someone to mind who needs encouragement. I will call them. I will pray for them.

  10. Lord, let me be slow to speak and quick to listen. The opposite of my natural instinct.

  11. God, help me find you in the ordinary. In the dishes. In the commute. In the spreadsheet. You are there.

  12. Jesus, you had no place to lay your head. Help me hold my possessions loosely. They are not mine anyway.

  13. Father, into your hands I commit the rest of January. Every morning. Every evening. Every moment in between.

  14. Lord, let this January morning prayer change me. Not just today. For the rest of the year. Amen.
