God Grant Me the Serenity Prayer

269 God Grant Me the Serenity Prayer Variations for Peace and Courage

ou have probably heard the Serenity Prayer before. God grant me the serenity to accept the things I cannot change, the courage to change the things I can, and the wisdom to know the difference. Those words hang on walls and appear in recovery meetings. They comfort people in crisis and guide people in confusion. But most people only know that first verse. The full prayer goes much deeper.

Reinhold Niebuhr wrote this prayer in the 1930s. He was a theologian who saw the chaos of World War II rising. He needed words that acknowledged human limitation without giving up on human responsibility. The prayer spread quickly. Alcoholics Anonymous adopted it. Millions have prayed it since. Its power comes from its honesty. Life has things you cannot fix. You need peace about that. Life also has things you can fix. You need courage for that.

These 269 prayers expand on the Serenity Prayer. Each one takes a different angle. Some pray for serenity in specific situations like illness, financial trouble, or family conflict. Others pray for courage to make hard changes. Many ask for wisdom to know which situation requires acceptance and which requires action. You cannot pray the serenity prayer too many times. It reveals something new each time.

Pray these prayers when you feel stuck. Pray them when you cannot tell if you should fight or surrender. Pray them when you are trying to change something you should accept. Pray them when you are accepting something you should change. The serenity prayer protects you from both cowardice and recklessness.

Do not rush through these prayers. Pause after each line. Ask yourself, what am I trying to change that I need to accept? What am I accepting that I need to change? That question is the wisdom the prayer asks for. Let these 269 versions of that question reshape how you face your life.

Let us begin.
